FAQ

Questions about registered offices.

What is a registered office address?+

A registered office is your company's official address. Companies House, HMRC and the courts use it to send official letters and legal notices, and it's shown on the public Companies House register.

Does every limited company need one?+

Yes. Every UK limited company must have a registered office address in the part of the UK where it's registered. A company registered in England and Wales needs an address in England or Wales. The FOUNDRS address is in London, so it's available to companies registered in England and Wales.

Can I use my home address?+

Yes, as long as it's an appropriate address: documents sent there must come to the attention of someone acting for the company, and their delivery must be able to be recorded. Your registered office appears on the public register, so your home address would be publicly visible.

Is my registered office publicly visible?+

Yes. Anyone can see your registered office address on the Companies House register. Previous registered office addresses also remain visible in your company's filing history.

What mail will FOUNDRS receive?+

We receive official mail sent to your registered office from Companies House, HMRC, the courts and government departments. It's scanned and delivered to your FOUNDRS account and email inbox within one business day.

Mail must be addressed to your registered company or business name. We do not accept personal mail without a business connection. Director mail is accepted if you have the Director's Service Address add-on.

What happens to my physical post?+

After scanning, your physical post is stored securely for 30 days and then shredded. If you need the original, we can forward it anywhere in the UK for the cost of a first class stamp plus 50p.

Can I use the service if my company already exists?+

Yes. If your company is registered in England and Wales, you can switch its registered office to FOUNDRS at any time.

Can I change my registered office to FOUNDRS?+

Yes. Link your company to FOUNDRS and we'll file the change of registered office with Companies House for you. The new address takes effect once Companies House registers it.

Is this the same as a business trading address?+

No. Your registered office is your company's official address for statutory mail, and it's shown on the public register. A trading address is where you do business or deal with customers, and it can be different.

A director's service address is the correspondence address shown for each director on the register. A director's service address isn't included in the Registered Office & Virtual Mailbox, but it's available as an optional add-on, priced per director or Person with Significant Control rather than per company. FOUNDRS doesn't provide trading addresses.
